The Paris System for urinary cytology<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h1><\/header>

The primary purpose of urinary cytology is to detect high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC).<\/p>\n

The Paris System<\/strong> working group, consisting of cytopathologists, anatomo-pathologists and urologists proposed and published a standardized reporting system that includes specific diagnostic categories and cytomorphological criteria for a reliable HCUG diagnosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology (TPS) was first published in 2016 with the clear goal of standardizing cytologic diagnostic criteria and providing uniform reporting in order to improve patient classification and associated clinical management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since the introduction of TPS, there is an improvement in the screening potential and surveillance of urinary cytology, with a reduction in the high rates of unknow diagnoses, improving sensitivity and providing a proper risk classification for patients.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>

The Paris System<\/strong> diagnostic categories for Urinary Cytology reporting are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Non-diagnostic\/inadequate<\/li>\n
  2. Negative for High Grade Uroterial Carcinoma (NHGUC)<\/li>\n
  3. Atypical Urothelial Cells (AUC)<\/li>\n
  4. Suspect of High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma (SHGUC)<\/li>\n
  5. High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma (HGUC)<\/li>\n
  6. Low Grade Urothelial Neoplasia (LGUN)<\/li>\n
  7. Other: primary and secondary malignancies and various lesions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

    The parameters that define adequacy in urinary cytology are the cellularity and the volume of urine submitted for analysis<\/strong>; 30 ml appears to be a reasonable volume to minimize the number of inadequate samples and identify high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC).<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
